Action for Life Skills and Values in East Africa – ALiVE

Open Source

The open-source platform developed by the ALiVE initiative plays a crucial role in addressing the need for accessible and contextually relevant tools to assess life skills and values among youth and children in East Africa. By providing these resources free of charge, the platform fosters collaboration among various stakeholders, including governments, civil society organizations, and researchers. This collaborative approach ensures that the assessment tools are not only tailored to the unique needs of different communities but also remain dynamic and continuously improved through shared experiences and feedback.

The platform aspires to be a comprehensive repository and item bank for evaluating a broad spectrum of life skills and values pertinent to the East African context. Ultimately, the platform aims to produce robust evidence that informs education policies and practices, ensuring that young people in East Africa and beyond are equipped with essential life skills.

In a rapidly changing world, understanding and nurturing life skills among adolescents and children is essential for their personal and social development. The open-source platform not only democratizes access to vital assessment tools but also promotes capacity building within local communities, empowering them to evaluate and enhance their educational strategies. By enabling stakeholders to share knowledge and best practices openly, this initiative contributes to a collective effort to cultivate resilient, informed, and skilled young individuals who can navigate future challenges effectively.

The ALiVE Survey Tool, developed under the Regional Education and Learning Initiative (RELI), a network of more than 70 civil society organizations in East Africa, targets both in and out of school adolescents aged 13 to 17 years across Kenya, Tanzania (mainland and Zanzibar) and Uganda.

The survey tool was designed to assess the proficiencies of adolescents across four areas of functioning: the life skills of self-awareness, problem solving, and collaboration, and the value of respect and to provide a snapshot of how young people would respond to situations that could be seen as problematic (drawing on their problem solving skills); how they would respond to negative events that impacted themselves or their community (drawing on their respect for and awareness of self and others); and how they would work together when faced with tasks that would be difficult to complete alone (drawing on their collaboration skills).
